2007-05-16: Smartwool SocksLawrence's Gear Review Corner
Now first gear review of the web site you may be expecting me to review something super technical, expensive and shiny. Instead I've decided to review an item of clothing that I was introduced to several years ago and since then I haven't used any other brand. Smartwool Socks.

Now everybody owns a pair of socks, and your probably thinking how boring, socks are just socks. But the difference a good set of socks can make to your well being is truly the hidden eighth wonder of the world. Now I wont bore you with the technical details of smartwool socks but their name spells it out for you, they're made of wool as opposed too a synthetic man made material. Essentially no synthetic fibre can match Smartwool's ability to quickly wick, absorb and evaporate moisture to keep you drier longer. Wool being a natural insulator means it keeps your feet cool in summer and warm in winter. They also don't shrink or itch and they are antimicrobial - in other words, odor causing bacteria can't find a home in your socks!
I use the Smartwool Hiking Light Cushion for daily use whilst working on the shop floor with my trainers or approach shoes, I also use them for running in, here they have the perfect combination of cushioning with out being to warm. With my summer hill walking boots I need the extra cushioning of the Hiking Medium Cushion particularly on top of the sock next to where the boots are laced as the Light Cushion has no loop stitch here. For my winter boots which have more volume and are a lot stiffer I need the extra padding of the Trekking Heavy Cushion especially cause of my skinny legs which get abused by the stiffer boot and need more comfort.
The best bit about Smartwool socks is my feet never feel as sweaty or as uncomfortable as they have done when I've been using Synthetic socks. Good socks are easily over looked but there's no point in having the best boots on the market and combining them with some over used holey socks that you've been using for years. Go on treat your feet they deserve it!
